CSMA choirs shine in international music competition

Congratulations to CSMA’s Performance Choir and A Cappella Ensemble — they placed second in their divisions with a ranking of “excellent” in the international music competition “Music in the Parks” on May 17 in Milpitas. The competition includes choirs, orchestras, and bands throughout the U.S. and Canada. This was our first competition experience with these groups. The choirs were under the direction of Theresa Ronan/Judaline Swinkels (Performance Choir) and Adesuwa O./Judaline Swinkels (A Cappella Ensemble). Well done!  If choral singing is your jam, sign up for one of our choirs this summer!

Audtions now open for CSMA Junior Orchestra

Auditions are open now for the CSMA Junior Orchestra for ages 8-12. Rehearsals are from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Sundays, and applicants are encouraged to have 1.5 years of musical experience (private lessons, band, orchestra, or equivalent). Auditions and admissions are on a rolling basis.

CSMA is proud to continue our partnership with the Sunnyvale Youth Philharmonic to offer the CSMA Junior Orchestra, our brand-new, entry-level program for aspiring musicians who want to enjoy playing with other students in an orchestral setting. The CSMA Junior Orchestra is a passion-driven and joy-centered program!

Ceramics students make unique creations

Ganesh, Sunil, and Karthik (pictured, left to right) are friends and longtime CSMA ceramics students who asked their children for input on what they should create in the Spring session.

The kids, ages 5-13, sketched mugs with imaginative shapes and designs based on Lego characters, pets, favorite animals, and sports. The dads threw the mugs in various shapes on the wheel, then painstakingly brought the sketches to life using hand-painted glazes. Teacher Eliza Thomas provided valuable advice and offered plenty of encouragement.

They produced a total of 14 beautiful mugs — what a lucky group of kids!

What art projects are you most proud of? Send us your story with a photo (or “mug shot!”) to be featured in a future issue.

Thank you for experiencing India with CSMA

CSMA was excited to host “Experience India,” a one-of-a-kind celebration of Indian culture and cuisine held in CSMA’s courtyard on June 1. The evening featured a stunning classical Indian dance performance, vibrant artwork by local artist Pragati Sharma Mohanty, and a multi-course feast of authentic Indian cuisine prepared by chef Arul Lourdusamy (RajaRani Bakery and Restaurant of Sunnyvale, CA) – it was an evening to remember! Thank you to the 55 guests who attended this special event in support of CSMA’s programs.

The unique event was hosted by CSMA board members Simi Acharya, Sohi Sohn and Suchitra Subrahmanyan. Attendees also enjoyed special performances by Guru Gayatri Joshi and Guru Dipti Mallik.

Proceeds from this event will support CSMA’s financial aid programs that ensure all students, regardless of their background or financial means, have access to high-quality arts education.

Adult art classes are open for registration

Creativity isn’t just for kids — CSMA also serves hundreds of adult art students each year, and many come back again and again! This summer we have a great set of workshops, mini-sessions, and 8-week classes just for grownups: try ceramics, watercolors, digital art, drawing, printmaking — even a sampler for those who can’t decide!
