CSMA is excited to celebrate World Singing Day with a special event set for Oct. 18. As part of an international movement, CSMA will host one of four events in California in collaboration with the World Singing Day non-profit. The free event will take place from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM in Tateuchi Hall.

“World Singing Day is a global sing-along held annually on the 3rd Saturday in October. As a catalyst for positive human connection, this one day each year serves as an opportunity to celebrate our global family through the international language of music”, according to the organization’s website.

CSMA Music Classes Manager Judaline Swinkels is excited to bring this event to Tateuchi Hall for the first time.

“World Singing Day really aligns with CSMA’s mission and our values,” Swinkels said. “To spread the joy of music and the feeling of community and just being able to get together and enjoy making music for its own value — not for performance or technique — but just for the sheer enjoyment of what it can do for you as a person.”

This interactive sing-along is open to all ages and all singing levels.  Members of our on-campus choirs (Performance Choir, Training Choir, A Cappella Vocal Ensemble, and Community Choir)  will be on hand to lead the way as we sing top hits spanning decades and genres, Swinkels shared.

“It’s just getting together for the joy of singing together,” she said. “And knowing that you’re singing along with thousands of people all over the world on the same day is very cool.”

CSMA faculty and Community Choir Director Von Bringhurst will emcee the event. All the song lyrics will be projected on a large screen.

“It’ll be about an hour and a half of music. We have songs ranging from the 60s to present day,” Swinkels said. “There’s a diverse mix, so people will find something that they like. “

The set list includes:

Happy – Pharrell Williams

Hakuna Matata from Lion King

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da – The Beatles

Surfin’ U.S.A.- Beach Boys

Dancing in the Street – Martha and the Vandellas

Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You – Frankie Valli

We Will Rock You – Queen

I’m A Believer -The Monkees

California Dreamin’ – The Mamas & The Papas

September – Earth, Wind, and Fire

Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and The Waves

You’ve Got a Friend in Me – Toy Story

Count on Me – Bruno Mars

What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

The event will conclude with everyone singing the “Song of the Year” provided by the World Singing Day (WSD) nonprofit. This year, the song is “All of Us,” written by WSD founder Scott Johnson.

Registration is open until the day before the event. Walk-ins are welcome based on availability.

If you or your family members love to sing, CSMA offers private voice lessons as well as several choirs and ensembles.
