Gnomes have a rich tradition in many Scandinavian countries, as mischief-makers who love tradition, dislike change and are symbols of good luck. In the United States, gnomes are typically represented during the winter holidays, due to their resemblance to Santa Claus. Get into the holiday spirit with this fun and festive art project that introduces young children to basic shapes!

Materials:

– Pencil
– White paper
– Eraser
– Sharpie or black marker
– Medium of choice for drawing: Markers, crayons, etc.
– Colored paper
– Scissors
– Glue

Step 1: Sketch your gnome using basic shapes

A gnome can be created using basic shapes—a triangle for the hat, beard and arms, a square for the body, circles for the nose and feet. Draw your gnome using basic shapes on white paper.

Step 2: Outline your gnome

Using a sharpie or black marker outline your pencil drawings to make the shapes stand out. Erase any remaining pencil marks.

Step 3: Color your gnome

Add color to your gnome.

Step 4: Add details

Make your gnome one-of-a-kind by adding details to the clothing.

Step 5: Cut out your gnome

Using scissors, cut out your gnome

Step 6: Make a card or gift tag

Using glue, adhere your gnome to a piece of paper to create a card or cut any excess trim and add a piece of string to create a gift tag.

What other kinds of gnomes can you make? Here are a few we came up with.
