Get into the Halloween spirit by creating a spooky watercolor resist haunted house. In this open-ended art project, we will take you step-by-step to create your own ghostly creation! If you are looking for an art class the whole family will enjoy, check out CSMA’s art workshops for all ages.

Materials:

– Pencil

– Heavy white paper, preferably watercolor paper

– Watercolors

– Paintbrushes

– Crayons or oil pastels

Step 1: Sketch a haunted house

Think about what a haunted house looks like or look at some pictures of haunted houses for inspiration. What makes it unique and mysterious? Using a piece of paper and a pencil, lightly sketch your haunted house. Be sure to include the ground the house sits on, the moon and maybe even a creepy tree. You could even add some ghost or skeleton shapes.

Step 2: Draw haunted house and moon

Using a black crayon or oil pastel, create a silhouette of the house making sure to press down firmly with the crayon to ensure full coverage. Do the same with a yellow or white crayon to create the moon. You may need to sharpen your crayon along the way.

Step 3: Paint the windows

To create life in the house, paint the windows with yellow watercolors. Let dry.

Step 4: Paint the night sky

Using a wet brush and your watercolors, paint the rest of the background using dark colors such as blue and purple mixed with black. Notice how crayons or the pastels “resist” the watercolor!  Move quickly, so you can blend the colors together and create an ominous sky. Be sure to paint around your yellow moon and windows. Let dry completely.

Get younger artists involved in this activity by having an adult or older sibling draw the haunted house, then hand over the paintbrush and watercolors to the child to create the night sky.

Drawn by parent and painted by a 2-year-old.
