A picturesque journey through emotions and imagined places is now on display at Mohr Gallery. CSMA is pleased to present “A Touch of Whimsy” featuring the mixed media and acrylic works of Bay area artist Stacy Dynan.
A largely self-taught artist, Dynan’s work uses texture to create vivid landscapes and imaginative scenes. She says along with the whimsical subject matter she tries to let the colors vibrate at a high level and generate a feeling of warmth and fun.

Dynan’s works are often described as dreamscapes and take the viewer on their own personal journeys.
“I build up my canvas with multiple layers of paint and glazes. I often incorporate texture through molding paste and paper,” Dynan said. “ Once I finish creating the image, I then sand the painting to bring forward glimpses of previous layers of color. Finally, I complete the piece with several layers of a high gloss varnish. This technique gives a slightly distressed but highly polished look that pulls you further into the art.”

Her artistic journey started coincidentally as she was working in London. Sometimes all it takes is one moment to change the trajectory of one’s path. For Dynan it happened when she encountered a unique painting.
The painting, a landscape abstract, by Scottish artist John Brown, ignited a passion that compelled Dynan to purchase her very first art supplies. The rest is history. Once at home, new brushes flowed over blank canvases, unleashing her inner painter.

Dynan’s artistic pursuits have not only stood the test of time but have also earned her international acclaim, drawing collectors from across the world. While rooted in her Canadian upbringing, Dynan’s artistic journey has been enriched by her experiences living in Australia and England, ultimately culminating in her settled life with family in the vibrant Bay Area (stacydynan.com).
“A Touch of Whimsy” will be on display through Jan. 28.
