After School Dance & Movement Teacher – San Mateo Foster City School District

Experience:
Previous dance teaching experience, including leading community groups or students in dance instruction. Strong background in modern dance forms, with demonstrated knowledge of various dance techniques, choreography, improvisation, and performance.
How to apply

This is a teaching opportunity to lead elementary students through engaging Dance and Movement Arts instruction within a public school environment. This position is a part-time, non-exempt hourly position with 2 days of teaching per week. The dance teacher will teach at the school site/sites in the assigned school district every week during the school year. The ideal candidate has a deep passion for dance, strong foundational knowledge across various dance styles, and a commitment to nurturing young students’ creativity, rhythm, and confidence. Professional development, mentorship, and curriculum access are provided.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to adapt and refine the CSMA Dance and Movement curriculum. 
  • Implement the curriculum in a public elementary school setting using CSMA’s online lesson planning tools and resources. 
  • Have a thorough understanding of CA State VAPA standards.
  • Create a safe, fun, and inclusive learning space that fosters self-expression, collaboration, and confidence through movement.
  • Organize, choreograph, and direct simple end-of-session or school dance showcases.  
  • Attend faculty meetings and trainings by CSMA and school partners to enhance understanding of curriculum and teaching skills. (Mentor program available for new teachers)
  • Ensure the success of the Art4Schools program at your site by communicating regularly with on-site school staff and CSMA

 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Previous experience teaching dance, leading youth community groups, or guiding elementary-age students through movement, dance technique, and performance. 
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of the children
  • Effective communication, both verbal and written, to school partners, staff/teachers, and CSMA
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Competent computer skills and familiarity with video conferencing software, Zoom, Google Workspace, and MS Office.
  • A reliable form of transportation to get to and from the assigned school sites and occasional trips to the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View, CA.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
