CSMA believes that every child should receive the benefits that music and art education bring. While this has been delivered by school faculty or specialists in the past, this unfortunately may not be possible in today’s budget environment.
Our award-winning in-school art and music programs provide a curriculum-based and cost-effective alternative for schools unable to have music and art teachers on staff. This is not a new idea. In fact, since 1981, we have served more than 7,000 children (Gr. K-8) annually through our Arts4Schools and Music4Schools programs.
Quality arts education not only fosters students’ confidence and creativity but also improves their academic achievement. Children who receive quality arts education are more likely to do better in all academic disciplines and graduate from high school. Students receiving only 2 years of music education average 29 points higher on the verbal portion and 19 points higher on the math portion of their SATs than children with no music coursework, with longer study increasing these benefits annually. The visual arts stimulate the brain, bring every subject to life, and teach new perspectives and collaborative problem-solving skills that are essential to the 21st Century workforce.
CSMA believes that quality art education is quality education. Our in-school art and music programs are offered as part of the curriculum day at local public and private schools, and share the same model of instructional excellence that set the standards for other academic disciplines. That is, to engage and motivate youth through in-depth lessons that build learning sequentially, are taught by experts in their fields, and follow a curriculum that meets or exceeds CA State Standards for instruction in the arts.
Because CSMA’s programs coordinate with the classroom curriculum, the visual and performing arts become an integral, enriching part of a child's education. Children receive weekly hands-on classes and interactive concerts at their school that stimulate critical thinking, curiosity and creativity, as well as develop cultural understanding.
CSMA’s in-school art and music programs are offered on a contractual basis to local school districts and to individual public and private schools. Programs are supported are through a variety of collaborative efforts with districts and individual schools, parent organizations, school education foundations, and CSMA's donors and sponsors. To extend learning beyond the school day, CSMA also teaches chorus, group music lessons, after-school art clubs and provides student performance/exhibit opportunities.
More information about CSMA’s in-school music and art instruction is available in our individual program descriptions.
