Education

Jaime Exley attended the Eastman School of Music, where he earned a Bachelors of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate. While at Eastman he studied trombone with John Marcellus and Mark Kellogg and tuba with Cherry Beauregard. He also pursued graduate studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with John Engelkes.

Performing and Teaching Experience

As a bass trombone and tuba player Jaime has performed with a variety of ensembles including The Buffalo Philharmonic, Harrisburg Symphony and The Wild Ginger Philharmonic of New York. He toured Japan twice with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, worked as a staff musician at Busch Gardens theme park in Williamsburg, VA and played with the big bands of Dave Rivello, Gap Mangione, Bob Enos, A Touch of Brass, The De Anza 8:00 Daddios and the Chabot Jazz Orchestra.

Jaime won the International Trombone Association’s Kai Winding Jazz award as a member of the Bionic Bones and was runner up in the solo competition at the Eastern Trombone Workshop.

At CSMA

Jaime joined the CSMA faculty in 2008 as the trombone instructor.

Teaching Philosophy and Approach

The Sufi poet Rumi wrote to his teacher, “You are yourself the animal that we hunt when you come with us on the hunt.” I believe that a teacher must serve as an example to give the student a glimpse into what is possible while, at the same time, being a companion to the student on their own path of discovery.
