Greg Mason CSMA Music Teacher

Education and Background

Greg holds Doctorate and Masters degrees in Collaborative Piano from the University of Illinois, and a Bachelors in and Graduate Studies in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan. He studied with famed pianists Gyorgy Sandor, John Wustman, Martin Katz, Ian Hobson

Greg has performed concerts in 14 countries, as well as on PBS and NPR. Concerts include a State Department tour, as well as performances at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, United Nations, Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, staff Carnegie Hall (Rockefeller) Competition, Berkeley Symphony, Cal Performances, Virginia Opera, Sacramento Opera, preparation for a Pavarotti tour, and a masterclass for Placido Domingo. He has been a member of four national Broadway tours and received the Critics Circle Awards – Best Music Director in 2012.

Greg has taught piano at his private studios in Oakland and New York City. He has been on the faculty of the University of Oregon, adjunct faculty at Julliard, and taught masterclasses at various institutions including USC, Northwestern, UT-Austin, University of Maryland, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). He has been an adjudicator for numerous competitions.

Teaching Philosophy

Greg is a friendly and supportive teacher, strong in both technique and repertoire, from beginner to advanced and professional. He teaches classical and popular styles, drawing from many methods and pedagogies, with concentration on tension-free mechanism.
