Why Study the Arts in School?
The arts are a critical part of a well-rounded education. For some students, exposure in school may be the only access they have to the arts. Studying visual arts regularly during the school day benefits students by building and strengthening:
- Achievement in academic subjects
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Social and communication skills
- Creativity and self-expression
- Self-esteem and confidence
- Cultural awareness
The program consists of in-depth, skill-building and sequential art lessons that meet the California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards for Art. Classes and content is appropriate for each grade level. Taught by professional CSMA visual arts instructors, these art classes coordinate with each classroom’s curriculum to become an integral part of the school day.
Art4Schools emphasizes four major areas:
- Creative expression
- Appreciation of the cultural and historical foundation of art
- Understanding of the language of art
- Development of technical skills.
Art lessons and projects focus on drawing and painting with an introduction to ceramics, sculpture and basic three-dimensional concepts. Students develop basic technical skills, as well as learn concepts such as line, shape, value, form and color. Lessons are often inspired by a master artist or a cultural/historical context that encourages students to explore topics from other perspectives.
CSMA’s Art4Schools program includes:
- Sequential, skill-building, grade-level appropriate art curriculum taught by professional art instructors
- Full program administration including hiring, training and mentoring teachers
- Partnerships with schools on teacher scheduling and evaluation
- All art materials and supplies
- Art exhibition opportunities
Art4Schools programs are offered on a contractual basis. Fees are based upon the duration of the program and the number and length of classes. CSMA’s in-school programs are made possible through the collaboration of school districts, individual schools, parent organizations, and community and government resources. Programs may also receive support from CSMA donors and sponsors depending on need and circumstances.

The music and art programs provided by CSMA are incredible and so desperately needed in our schools. I was blown away by the quality of the student artwork, all the way down to the kindergartners. My son has a growing passion for art that was sparked by his art classes. Thank you for providing music and art programs in our schools. And thank you for finding wonderful music and art teachers.

-Principal, Mountain View Whisman School District
Students look forward to their art sessions - it is one of the highlights in their schedule. With the heavy emphasis on core academics, even in the primary grades, art instruction feels like a luxury. It is wonderful to have such a quality program offered to our students.
