CSMA’s award-winning, in-school visual arts program, Art4Schools, provides quality art education to students in Grades K-12. Students receive weekly art lessons as part of their regular school day. For over 30 years, CSMA has brought music and art programs to tens of thousands of students in public and private schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. CSMA’s goal is to ensure that all children in the community have access to an arts education.

Why Study the Arts in School?

The arts are a critical part of a well-rounded education. For some students, exposure in school may be the only access they have to the arts. Studying visual arts regularly during the school day benefits students by building and strengthening:

  • Achievement in academic subjects
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Social and communication skills
  • Creativity and self-expression
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Cultural awareness

About Art4Schools

The program consists of in-depth, skill-building and sequential art lessons that meet the California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards for Art. Classes and content is appropriate for each grade level. Taught by professional CSMA visual arts instructors, these art classes coordinate with each classroom’s curriculum to become an integral part of the school day.

Art4Schools emphasizes four major areas:

  • Creative expression
  • Appreciation of the cultural and historical foundation of art
  • Understanding of the language of art
  • Development of technical skills.

Art lessons and projects focus on drawing and painting with an introduction to ceramics, sculpture and basic three-dimensional concepts. Students develop basic technical skills, as well as learn concepts such as line, shape, value, form and color. Lessons are often inspired by a master artist or a cultural/historical context that encourages students to explore topics from other perspectives.

-Former Principal, Lyndale School

The music and art programs provided by CSMA are incredible and so desperately needed in our schools. I was blown away by the quality of the student artwork, all the way down to the kindergartners. My son has a growing passion for art that was sparked by his art classes. Thank you for providing music and art programs in our schools.  And thank you for finding wonderful music and art teachers.

Art instruction in a child’s life is a treasured and valuable piece of their education.
-Principal, Mountain View Whisman School District

Students look forward to their art sessions - it is one of the highlights in their schedule. With the heavy emphasis on core academics, even in the primary grades, art instruction feels like a luxury. It is wonderful to have such a quality program offered to our students.
