Karimi, Pantea


Pantea Karimi is a painter and printmaker and has been teaching art to youth and adults since 1993. In her work she explores the history of science and investigates how older scientific knowledge was communicated through both image and text. She examines these concepts within the pages of medieval and early modern scientific manuscripts, particularly, Persian, Arab and European.

Karimi started her training in painting and classical music at age 14, which led to her decision to pursue art professionally. She earned her MFA in printmaking and painting from San Jose State University in 2009. She also holds a Diploma in printmaking and glassworks and an MFA in graphic design. Karimi’s fine arts and graphic works have been featured in several publications in Iran, Italy, the UK and the United States. Her prints and digital works have been exhibited in various venues in Iran, Algeria, Germany, Mexico, the UK, and the United States, including the de Young Museum and the Yerba Buena Art Center in San Francisco, 2012 ZERO1 Biennial, the Google Company in Mountain View, the NASA Research Center in Sunnyvale and the San Jose City Hall. She is the recipient of the 2016-2017 Kala Fellowship-Residency Award; the 2010 Distinguished Artist Award by the City of Cupertino Fine Arts Commission; and the 2011 Multicultural Arts Leadership Initiative Fellowship.

Karimi has been teaching and working at various educational institutions including Education Action Zone in England, San Jose Children Discovery Museum, San Jose State University, Euphrat Museum of Art and Cabrillo College. She has been a faculty member in Community School of Music and Arts since 2006.

Teaching Philosophy

“I believe art is a great educational tool to expand children’s horizon, nurture their creative minds and bring a poetic structure to their everyday experience. In my classrooms, students get exposed to history of art and variety of materials, techniques and methodologies. I want students to take joy in the process of learning and realize their individual artistic potentials.”
