CSMA's Mohr Gallery Presents POWER: DRAWINGS & PRINTS by Fanny Retsek
April 13 - June 10, 2012 - Reception, Friday April 20, 6-8pm
The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) at Finn Center in Mountain View presents POWER: DRAWINGS AND PRINTS by FANNY RETSEK. The exhibition will be in CSMA’s Mohr Gallery from April 13 - June 10, with an opening reception and artist talk on Friday, April 20, 6-8 pm.
The exhibition follows the tradition of printmaking as a tool for social justice and the dissemination of ideas, and will focus on Retsek's “awe and love for our vast, beautiful and interconnected world.” Her work begins with a number she hears or reads in the news, which she draws with a sequence of repetitive tally marks, contextualized by drawings of animals, objects and people. “In making and counting the marks, I get more of a sense of how big or small a number is and so gain a deeper understanding of the real impact of this quantification,” says Retsek. In describing her work, Restek notes that the works of Felix Gonzales-Torres, Josepth Beuys and Kiki Smith have been influential.
Retsek received her MFA, with an emphasis on printmaking, from San Jose State University. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Bay Area and she is the recipient of numerous honors and awards.
